Focus and Scope

Focus

JORD publishes short innovative papers that will significantly advance knowledge and understanding of ocean dynamics. It publishes also commented tables of data from recent or old observations or experiments, provided they make a contribution to a research field of interest in marine sciences.

The different aspects of the ocean are considered from estuaries to the deep sea.

Different disciplines contributing to the knowledge of ocean characteristics and effect of man activity are considered, biology, physics, chemistry, as well as sedimentology. Multi-disciplinary approaches are welcome.

Many samples are still unanalysed, many tables of results are still unpublished. It is among the objectives of this journal to contribute to data mining in research laboratories and to promote the activity as a contribution to description of the long term evolution of marine ecosystems. Eventually data could be included in one of the present ocean data bases.

Sections in the journal

Four types of paper will be considered:

  1. research papers related to the major scientific programs developed at national or international scale, including first results from doctoral thesis projects. Study of processes or phenomenon, through observation, experiment, data analysis and modelling are considered. Annexes will be accepted to introduce new or complex methods provided they are clearly presented and useful for teaching at master or PhD level.
  2. data description; biogeography contributions, reference to a formal or informal data base. This can be new data coming from recent cruises or experiment as well as old data relevant to a present question. The data description and methods used will appear in the main file. Data tables will appear as a supplementary file.
  3. basic information about cruises (station position, sampling methods, reference of data bases, general comments on the cruise) which might be reference to other works about a cruise.
  4. innovative or controversial ideas which are valuable to the progress of knowledge and concepts. These opinions should be based on data analysis or scientific literature synthesis. They should not be personal criticism or flattery. This section will allow senior scientist to test new concepts, to set the first steps toward a new theory or to produce sound argument to show the caveats of the present theories. This type of manuscript will be published under the responsibility of the editorial board of the Journal.

Training role of the journal

This journal is intended to provide information and help to PhD students willing to publish rapidly some information about their current work. The preliminary results will be considered with the same criteria as usual manuscripts, they will follow the same review process. The difference is that they will not be rejected without a round of suggestions from the editorial board to improve the manuscript. This training exercise will allow the students to produce new articles to submit to different journals in the field of oceanography.

Training means learning by practical work. Publishing results in a scientific journal is learning to follow some rules about planning research work, using methods, interpreting results and commenting them in the frame of the present knowledge imbedded in the published litterature. Trial and error process, consideration of critical comments from non hierarchical positioned scientists is the usual way of learning and understanding research deontology.

The editorial team will be especially attentive to the first publication given by a young scientist who is the first author of a manuscript. The quality of the manuscript will be considered at first.

Peer Review Process

Articles are peer reviewed. Two scientists are involved in a careful examination of the manuscript (referenc to previous work, methods, data, hypothesis construction, figures, tables presentation). They should provide the editor a list of suggestions to improve the manuscript and also an overall decision about publication.

Data are under the responsability of the autors. Presentation of sampling and analytical methods are peer reviewed as for articles. Field cruises reports are under the responsability of the principal investigator of the cruise. Editors are in charge of the aspect and coherence of the presentation. Controversial ideas are published under the control of the editor who decide of the interest of these suggestions for the scientific community.

Publication Frequency

The articles will be grouped into 4 issues per year on the OJS site of the journal. However the accepted articles will be visible in the next issue as soon as the revision process is completed. If necessary a paper version twice a year can be ordered at the UOF secretary.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

The journal requires subscriptions to have a printed version available. Contact UOF office : romeo@rose.unice.fr
